What Is a Podiatrist and What Do They Do?

A podiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the foot and ankle.

Podiatrists diagnose and treat conditions like heel pain (plantar fasciitis), bunions, hammertoes, sports injuries (sprains), ankle pain, foot fractures, diabetic foot ulcers, and toenail or skin problems. They use medical and surgical methods to help patients walk and stay active.

What Symptoms Should Prompt a Visit to a Podiatrist?

  • Heel or foot pain lasting weeks. Chronic heel pain (especially first-step pain) often indicates plantar fasciitis or tendon injury.
  • Foot or ankle injuries. Sprains, twists, or fractures that cause pain, swelling, or bruising need a check-up.
  • Numbness or tingling. Loss of feeling in the foot may signal nerve problems that need treatment.
  • Wounds or infections. Any cut, sore, or ulcer on the foot (especially in diabetes) should be seen right away.
  • Recurring sprains or instability. Frequent ankle sprains or a feeling of giving way should be evaluated.
  • Visible deformities or nail issues. Painful bunions, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, warts, or corns that affect walking.
If you notice any of these, a podiatrist can diagnose the cause and start the right treatment

Have Questions?

See our FAQs for quick answers.

A podiatrist (DPM) is a foot and ankle specialist. They diagnose and treat all foot/ankle problems – bones, joints, tendons, nerves, skin, and nails – using medicine or surgery as needed.

Usually no. You can often book a podiatry appointment without a referral. (Check your insurance – some Medicare or health plans may still require one.) Getting treated early is best, so don’t wait for a referral if you have foot pain.

Yes. Podiatrists treat both the foot and the ankle. They handle ankle sprains, arthritis, fractures, and more.

People with diabetes should have regular foot exams. See a podiatrist right away if you notice any foot sore, redness, swelling, or ulcer. Diabetes can hide injuries, so prompt care is key.
