How is Plantar Fasciitis Treated?

  • Over-the-counter NSAIDs: Medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen help reduce pain and inflammation. These should not be taken for more than 10 consecutive days without medical guidance.
  • Rest: Temporarily stopping sports or the activity that triggered the condition, ideally for at least one week, allows the tissue time to recover.
  • Icing the foot: Apply ice for 10 to 15 minutes, twice daily. A frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel can be rolled along the bottom of the foot to reduce inflammation while providing a gentle massage.
  • Supportive footwear: Wear sturdy, well-cushioned shoes with proper arch support. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, flat shoes without support, and walking barefoot.
  • Orthotics or shoe inserts: Arch-support inserts can reduce strain on the plantar fascia. Options include over-the-counter inserts or custom-made orthotics molded to the exact shape of your foot.
  • Immobilization: A walking boot (walking cast or pneumatic CAM walker) may be worn for several weeks to hold the foot in place and reduce pressure on the plantar fascia. The duration depends on your provider’s recommendation.
  • Stretching and massage: Specific stretching and massage techniques for the foot and calf muscles may be recommended by your provider or a physical therapist.
  • Corticosteroid injections: Anti-inflammatory medications, such as prednisone, may be injected directly into the plantar fascia to reduce inflammation.

  • Maintain a healthy weight: Extra body weight adds stress to your feet. Maintaining a healthy body weight helps decrease pressure on the plantar fascia.
