What Causes Foot Arthritis?

Arthritis is a broad term that encompasses several conditions affecting the joints. Foot arthritis, which can be painful and disrupt one's active lifestyle in and around Davenport, Winter Haven & Lakeland, FL, refers to the inflammation and degeneration of the joints in the foot. If you experience foot pain or discomfort, Dr. Wellens-Bruschayt and Dr. Maria Jaramillo of Central Florida Foot and Ankle Center can diagnose and create a personalized podiatric treatment plan to help manage inflammation and optimize joint function in your foot.

What Causes Foot Arthritis?

The most common causes of foot arthritis, which may affect various parts of the foot, include –

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) refers to the naturally occurring wear-and-tear of the cartilage that occurs over time. It is most often seen in middle-aged and older adults, as age is among the leading contributing factors to osteoarthritis.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) refers to an autoimmune disorder that inflames the joints throughout the body, which, left untreated, could impact the affected joint's functioning.
  • Post Traumatic Arthritis is similar to OA in that the cartilage (protective cushioning) erodes only due to injury, not time. The injury could be a dislocation/fracture or ligament tear, as both increase the likelihood of the joint developing inflammation and pain from arthritis. These injuries can impact the joints' normal functioning, ultimately accelerating the cartilage's eroding.

Given the common arthritis types that develop in the foot, the following factors may also contribute to the development of foot arthritis -

Genetics or Family History

Genetic factors influence one's potential for developing arthritis.

Irregular Foot Mechanics

Abnormal foot mechanics, which may include high arches, misaligned joints, or flat feet, can cause undue stress on the foot's joints, accelerating the natural wearing away of the protective cartilage.

Overuse/Repetitive Stress

Activities like jumping, running, or jobs requiring extended walking or standing can contribute to foot arthritis.

Obesity

Carrying excessive weight increases the stress on all the joints in the body, including those in your feet.

Symptoms of Foot Arthritis

Foot arthritis symptoms may include one or more of the following -

  • Pain.
  • Swelling.
  • Stiffness.
  • Reduced range of motion.
  • Difficulty with walking or engaging in activities that involve the feet.
