FAQs About Bone Spurs

When you are suffering from pain in your feet related to a bone spur, you can call on Dr. Wellens-Bruschayt and Dr. Marie Jaramillo of Central Florida Foot and Ankle Center to provide the services you require. In addition to Winter Haven and Lakeland, they also have an office in Davenport, FL.

What Is a Bone Spur?

A bone spur is a bony growth that most often grows where bones meet bones. They are slow growing and usually smooth in texture. On your foot, the heel is the most likely location.

Do Bone Spurs Need Treatment?

Bone spurs only need treatment if they are causing you pain. They are quite a normal occurrence. You can live a full and happy life if you have one. If it is causing you pain, then you should contact your podiatrist.

Do Bone Spurs Cause Plantar Fasciitis?

No, they do not. While they may aggravate the condition if you have it, they are not the cause. The fact that they are often found together is what makes it seem that there is a cause and effect going on.

What Causes Bone Spurs?

The biggest factor in developing bone spurs is age. It is your body trying to repair itself by creating new bones. This leads to the formation of bone spurs. Other causes include badly fitting shoes, doing things that put a lot of stress on your feet, and being overweight.

Who Is at Risk of Bone Spurs?

Literally, anyone can get a bone spur, but it is more likely if you have osteoarthritis or diabetes, are over 60 years of age, or are a runner or jogger. Being overweight can also be a risk for bone spurs.

What Are the Treatments for Bone Spurs?

Our podiatrist will usually begin with the most conservative treatment for a bone spur in Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport, FL. This includes applying ice to the affected area with the recommendation to use OTC pain medication. Resting the foot after any exertion can help. If this isn't doing the trick, then a cortisone shot in the heel may be recommended or orthotics to cushion your heel. Stretching exercises can help and, finally, using a walking boot may be suggested.
