Treating Your Bunions

Here are some simple everyday strategies to ease bunion pain.

While bunions are relatively common, it doesn’t mean that you have to put up with achy, sore and painful feet. While it’s a good idea to turn to our Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport, FL, podiatrists Dr. Tatiana Wellens and Dr. Maria Jaramillo-Dolan if you suspect that you might have a bunion, if we catch the problem early enough, there are some simple everyday things you can do to control your bunion symptoms yourself.

Stretch it Out

Your feet need to stretch just like any other part of your body. Stretching can help reduce bunion pain. There are a variety of bunion-approved exercises that our Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport, FL, podiatrists would be happy to show you when you come in for a consultation. Resistance exercises, ball rolls and toe flexing are just some exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine to alleviate stress on the affected joint.

Wear the Proper Shoes

The shoes you wear day in and day out can seriously impact your foot health. Wearing shoes with high heels or putting too much pressure on the joint of the big toe is more likely to irritate the bunion and make it worse. To prevent bunion symptoms from becoming severe, you must consider the type of shoes you wear regularly. Throw out any old shoes that don’t provide support and opt for only shoes that offer superior support and cushioning for all areas of your feet.

Consider Shoe Inserts

Sometimes placing shoe inserts, also known as orthotics, into your shoes can provide your feet with enough support and stability to evenly distribute weight when standing or walking. While some over-the-counter shoe inserts are a one-size-fits-most, they could worsen symptoms, which is why you should talk to us about orthotics that are tailor-made to your feet.

While proper lifestyle changes and home care can certainly slow the progression of the bunion, it’s always best to turn to our Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport, FL, podiatrists first to confirm that you have a bunion. From there, we can map out a treatment plan to ease your bunion pain. To schedule an evaluation, call Central Florida Foot and Ankle Center at (863) 299-4551.

We are the only podiatry group in Polk county that offers a three dimensional bunion correction called Lapiplasty. There are multiple advantages to having a revolutionary procedure done for bunion deformity with significant reduction of recurrence.  While traditional 2D osteotomy surgery merely cuts & shifts the bone to address the cosmetic bump, Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ corrects the entire bone in 3D and secures the unstable foundation to get you back on your feet quickly in a walking boot. The Lapiplasty® Procedure has also shown low recurrence; 97% and 99% maintain 3D correction in 13 and 17 months respectively.
