Finding Treatment for Your Bone Spur

Bone spurs can make so many everyday activities uncomfortable. Pain can be an issue when you walk your dog, stand in line at the grocery store, or work out. Fortunately, your Lakeland, Davenport, and Winter Haven, FL, podiatrists, Drs. Tatiana Wellens-Bruschayt and Maria Jaramillo-Dolan, offer bone spur treatments that can ease your pain.

What are bone spurs?

Bone spurs are calcium deposits that tend to develop on tendons or bones near joints. The spurs form when your body attempts to repair the area after an injury. Spurs in the feet are most often found in the heel, big toe, or mid-foot area.

You may be more likely to develop the hard, bony bumps if you have arch issues, plantar fasciitis, arthritis, gout, lupus, or wear tight shoes. Other risk factors include aging, genetics, and being overweight or obese.

What are the symptoms of bone spurs?

Some bone spurs are visible, while others can only be seen on X-rays. The bumps can cause pain if they press on nerves, bones, muscles, or tendons. It's also possible to have a bone spur and experience no pain.

If you have pain, you may notice that it worsens when you move or bend your foot or toe. Other symptoms may include redness and swelling, stiffness, and trouble walking.

How are bone spurs treated?

If your bone spur doesn't cause any pain, you might not need treatment. Paying a visit to your Lakeland, Davenport, or Winter Haven foot doctor may be a good idea if your bone spur is painful, disrupts your life, or is growing. Padding the bone spur and wearing roomier, well-cushioned shoes will reduce pressure and pain. When pain flares up, applying heat or ice packs, and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication can be helpful.

Your podiatrist may recommend that you place orthotics in your shoes to decrease pressure on your bone spurs. The prescription shoe inserts offer extra cushioning and keep your feet properly aligned. Stretching and strengthening exercises and physical therapy may also be helpful.

If over-the-counter medications don't relieve your pain, a steroid injection might be helpful. Surgery may be needed if your bone spur continues to grow or other treatments aren't effective.
