Treating Toenail Fungus

Is it time to turn to the medical experts for toenail fungal treatment?

While toenail fungus isn’t typically a serious issue, it is important that you get the problem treated to prevent it from causing serious and uncomfortable changes to the shape and health of your toenails. Of course, if at-home care isn’t giving you the results you’re looking for, our Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport FL, podiatrists Dr. Tatiana Wellens and Dr. Maria Jaramillo-Dolan can certainly help you get your nail fungus under control.

Do home remedies work?

All you have to do is search online and you’re find everything from oregano oil to tea tree oil being touted as natural ways to kill the fungus; however, the verdict is out on home remedies for treating toenail fungus.

The problem is that many topical treatment options aren’t able to penetrate the nail, which means that it won’t be able to get under the nail to target the fungus. While people with minor infections may notice an improvement over the course of several months, many people end up coming to our Winter Haven, Lakeland, and Davenport FL, practice for more effective nail fungus treatment.

What can a podiatrist do to treat my fungal infection?

Since topical treatment options may not be effective, especially if you’re dealing with a severe or persistent infection, our doctor may recommend a systemic antifungal medication that you will need to take orally.

If you are unable to take an antifungal medication, then our podiatrists may recommend laser therapy. Laser fungal treatment has become a popular and effective way to treat recurring, persistent, and even serious fungal infections of the toenail.

How does laser toenail fungal therapy work?

This is a safe and painless way to treat fungal infections of the nails and unlike medications, this treatment doesn’t come with side effects. You will come into the office, where our podiatrist will place protective eyewear over your eyes. From there, we will shine a laser over the infected nail or nails for about 10 minutes per nail. The treatment is non-invasive, and you can go back to your normal routine immediately after.

While some people may only need one session, those with more severe fungal infections may need to come back in for another session or two to ensure that the infection has been fully treated. Once you have received laser therapy, you should notice the nail growing out clear within several months.
