When is it Time to See Us for a Painful Heel?

When heel pain interferes with your quality of life, it is time to see us at Central Florida Foot and Ankle Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and diagnose your condition while providing a treatment plan that eliminates the pain.

Pain in your heel can signify foot or ankle damage after an injury. Sprains signal ligament and soft tissue injury. However, when you experience this pain, it is primarily due to an abnormal walking gait that puts too much stress on the heel and the tissue surrounding this bone.

You can develop pain from walking, jumping, running, wearing poor-quality shoes, and being overweight. Some medical issues involving pain in your heel could be,

  • When a bone grows on the heel, it is known as a spur and is caused by unbalanced gait, running, jogging, obesity, and ill-fitting shoes.
  • Plantar fasciitis is when inflammation develops in the connective tissue from the back to the front of your foot from excess running and jumping.
  • Excessive pronation is abnormal pulling and stretching of the ligaments/tendons at the heel bone. Excessive pronation also affects the knees, lower back, and hips.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis, gout
  • Inflamed bursa
  • A growth
  • Bone growth to the Achilles tendon
  • Achilles tendon inflammation
  • Bone bruises
  • Stress fractures

It is common for a child between the ages of eight and thirteen to complain of painful heels due to excessive activities like jumping, running, walking, and playing sports. Increased activity increases the risk of painful heels.

If you have painful heels, you need to come and see us. However, consider some preventative measures to avoid this dilemma.

  • Make sure your shoes fit well.
  • Wear the proper shoes for each activity.
  • Before exercising, warm up.
  • Remember to rest, eat balanced meals, and sleep well.
  • Keep weight within an ideal range for your age and height.
